Citation landscape

Who AI engines actually cite

The distribution is far more concentrated than most strategies assume. Before planning to become a cited source, it is worth knowing how few sources there are, and that most of them are not company websites.

Concentration

A very short list absorbs most citations

The largest synthesis available pooled six independent studies covering more than 680 million citations recorded between August 2024 and April 2026.

Reddit is the single most-cited domain across generative engines, at roughly 40% of multi-engine aggregate citation frequency. Wikipedia is second, appearing in 26–48% of ChatGPT top-10 answers; YouTube third at about 19% of Google AI Overviews top-source share.

That is a more extreme concentration than any prior distribution in modern search. In classical results, a long tail of specialist sites could rank for specialist queries. In generated answers, a handful of very large community, reference and media domains supply most of what gets quoted.

Why these

Why community and reference sites dominate

The pattern is not arbitrary. The domains that win share properties that are hard for a company website to replicate.

  • Independence. A brand describing itself is a weaker source than a third party describing it. Engines are trained to prefer the latter, which no amount of on-site optimisation changes.
  • Specific lived detail. The highest-cited community content is long-form, first-person and concrete, named experience, real numbers, actual failure modes. Marketing copy has none of those properties.
  • Coverage breadth. A reference entry or a large forum has an answer for nearly any query, so retrieval finds something relevant far more often than on a narrow corporate site.
  • Structural clarity. Question-and-answer formats are natively extractable, which is exactly the unit these systems select.
  • Licensing. Increasingly, what a system is willing to quote is shaped by commercial agreements as much as by crawling.

OpenAI has assembled roughly 20 publisher partnerships covering 160+ outlets in more than 20 languages; Perplexity's revenue-share programme has added the Los Angeles Times, Adweek and The Independent alongside Time and Fortune.

Implication

What this means for your own website

Roughly 85% of AI references point to third-party platforms rather than brand-owned sites.

Omnibound, AEO statistics compilation 2026, source ↗

Roughly 85% of references point somewhere other than brand-owned sites. Read plainly, that means a strategy consisting entirely of publishing on your own domain is aimed at the smaller share of a highly concentrated market.

The realistic goal

For most organisations the achievable objective is not to become one of the fifteen dominant domains. It is to be accurately represented inside them, in the threads where your category is discussed, the reference entries that define it, and the trade coverage engines already quote.

This is uncomfortable for teams whose entire budget points at their own site, and it is where the gap between AEO as sold and AEO as evidenced is widest.

It does not follow that your own site is pointless. It is where entity resolution happens, where your claims become checkable, and what a journalist or community member links to when they write the thing that does get cited.

Boundaries

The line between participation and manipulation

Given how much citation flows through community platforms, there is an obvious temptation, and it is worth being explicit about it.

legitimate

Answering questions in your area of expertise

Under a real identity, disclosing affiliation, adding information a reader could not get elsewhere. This is participation.

legitimate

Correcting factual errors about you

Publicly and transparently, wherever the record is wrong.

legitimate

Earning coverage on trusted publications

The same work as classical PR and digital relations, aimed at a different downstream consumer.

avoid

Undisclosed astroturfing

Fake accounts, planted recommendations, paid endorsement presented as organic. It violates platform rules, and platforms are increasingly detecting and removing it, taking your citations with it.

avoid

Mass low-quality posting

Degrades the platform, gets removed, and produces nothing durable.

The practical argument against manipulation is not only ethical. Citation flowing through a platform that later removes your content leaves nothing behind, and platform enforcement is improving faster than the tactics are.

Volatility

The list is not stable

Citation distributions move quarter to quarter as engines change retrieval, sign licensing deals, and respond to litigation. The current picture is a snapshot, not a fixed order.

As of 31 May 2026, nine organisations had active suits against Perplexity over alleged copyright or trademark infringement, including CNN, The New York Times, News Corp, Encyclopedia Britannica and Reddit.

Two forces are actively reshaping it. Licensing agreements are making some corpora preferentially available and others off-limits. Litigation is pushing engines toward sources they have paid for or have clear rights to. Both mean the set of citable sources is becoming a negotiated artefact rather than simply whatever was crawlable.

Any strategy that depends on one platform's current citation share is fragile. The durable version is being accurately described wherever your category is discussed, which survives a change in which platform leads.

FAQ

Common questions

Which website is cited most by AI engines?

Reddit, at roughly 40% of multi-engine aggregate citation frequency in 2026 analyses. Wikipedia is second and YouTube third.

Why is Reddit cited so heavily?

It combines independence, first-person specific detail, question-and-answer structure that is natively extractable, and enormous topical coverage. The highest-cited format is long-form answer comments with named experience and concrete data.

Can my company website become a cited source?

It can, but roughly 85% of references point to third-party platforms, so it is the harder path. Your own site does essential work in entity resolution and in making claims checkable. It is usually not where the citation lands.

Should we post on Reddit to get cited?

Participate honestly if you have genuine expertise: real identity, disclosed affiliation, information a reader could not get elsewhere. Undisclosed promotion violates platform rules and is increasingly detected and removed, which takes the citations with it.

How stable is the citation landscape?

Not very. Licensing deals and litigation are actively reshaping which sources engines will quote, so current shares are a snapshot. Strategies tied to one platform's present dominance are fragile.
