Comparison

GEO vs AEO vs SEO, three different jobs

Three acronyms, sold interchangeably, describing genuinely different work with different metrics and different timescales. Here is the distinction that holds up, and how to decide which one your problem actually is.

SEO gets you a click. AEO gets you quoted. GEO gets you described correctly.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization

Earning a position in a ranked set of links, where the reader clicks through to your site. The work is relevance, authority, and crawlability; the measurement is rankings, impressions and organic sessions. Mature, well understood, and still where most qualified discovery happens.

Google still sends about 87.6% of search referrals; every AI assistant combined sends roughly 0.29%.

The honest framing in 2026: SEO's ceiling is lower than it was, because a growing share of queries are resolved without any click. Its floor has not moved. Google still sends the overwhelming majority of referral traffic, and every AI assistant combined sends a fraction of a percent.

AEO

Answer Engine Optimization

Earning a citation inside the generated response. The assistant synthesizes an answer and footnotes a handful of sources; AEO is the work of being one of them.

Why the unit is the passage

Answer engines chunk retrieved documents and rank individual passages, then generate an answer conditioned on the ones they selected. A page is never quoted: a span of text is.

This is why a page that answers the question in its opening lines outperforms a better-written page that arrives at the same conclusion in paragraph nine. Over half of sampled AI Overview citations came from the first 30% of the cited page.

55% of sampled AI Overview citations came from the first 30% of the cited page.

Measured in citation share across a fixed set of questions, not in rankings. And with the important caveat that citation rarely produces a click: the AI Overview's own cited links are followed roughly 1% of the time.

GEO

Generative Engine Optimization

Shaping how an assistant *describes* you, whether or not it links. Closer to entity and reputation management than to search marketing, and the discipline most organisations have no owner for.

The term was given its precise sense by the KDD 2024 paper that measured how content modifications affect visibility in generated answers, which is also the origin of most credible claims in this whole field.

Targeted content changes raised visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.

GEO-bench: roughly 10,000 queries across nine datasets. Authority-style edits, adding citations, statistics and quotations, outperformed cosmetic edits such as rewriting, simplification and keyword work. Effect size varied by domain.

GEO matters commercially in a way that is easy to underrate. A citation attached to an inaccurate description is arguably worse than no citation at all, because the error now carries the engine's authority. If an assistant tells a buyer you do not serve their market, or names a capability you retired two years ago, the citation worked against you.

  • Entity resolution, can the system tell your brand name, legal name and domain are one organisation?
  • Category association, does anything on the open web plainly state which category you are in?
  • Corroboration, does any source other than your own site say so?

Sequence

They layer, and the order is not optional

  1. 01

    Entity first

If engines cannot resolve who you are, nothing you publish can be attributed to you. This step produces no visible output, which is exactly why it gets skipped.

  2. 02

    Technical SEO second

Retrieval-based assistants search the web. A page that cannot be crawled cannot be retrieved. The old substrate still holds up the new layer.

  3. 03

    AEO third

Given a findable page, does it contain a passage worth quoting, question-shaped, specific, sourced?

  4. 04

    GEO continuously

Whether the description is accurate depends on the whole web's account of you, which is slower and less controllable than anything above.

The common failure is starting at step three. A beautifully structured, quotable page for a company the engines cannot resolve produces a citation nobody can connect to a business.

Decision

Which one is your actual problem?

SEO

You rank, and traffic is falling anyway

Likely a zero-click problem rather than a ranking one. Check whether your head queries now trigger AI summaries. If they do, the traffic is not coming back and the response is AEO, not more SEO.

AEO

Assistants answer your category but never name you

A citation problem. Your content is probably not extractable, not specific enough, or not fresh. Start with the pages that already answer buyer questions.

GEO

Assistants name you but describe you wrongly

An entity and corroboration problem. More content will not fix it; the correction has to appear in sources other than your own site.

none

Assistants have never heard of your category

A demand problem wearing a visibility costume. Being cited for questions nobody asks is not an outcome.

The obvious question

No, SEO is not dead

Asserted constantly by people selling the newer disciplines. The data does not support it.

Classical search still drives the majority of qualified discovery for most businesses. What has changed is that a growing share of queries are answered without a click, and that absence is invisible in conventional analytics: no impression, no ranking change, no bounce. You do not see the shortlist you were left off.

AEO and GEO are additions to the measurement surface, not replacements. A company that abandons technical SEO to chase citations discovers that retrieval-based assistants could not crawl the pages it wanted quoted.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO earns the citation; GEO governs how the assistant describes you whether or not it links. They share a substrate, entity records, provenance, semantic structure, which is why they are usually run together.

Should I stop doing SEO?

No. Google still sends the overwhelming majority of referral traffic, and retrieval-based assistants search the web: a page that cannot be crawled cannot be cited. SEO is the substrate, not the competitor.

Which should I invest in first?

Entity resolution, then whichever surface your buyers actually use. If they research in chat assistants, retrieval work pays back in weeks. If your category is decided by reputation and incumbency, model memory matters more and the work is third-party coverage with a much longer lag.

Do AEO and GEO need different suppliers?

Not necessarily, but they need separate measurements and separate timelines. A supplier reporting them as a single number is either not distinguishing them or hoping you will not ask.

Where did the term GEO come from?

From Aggarwal et al., 'GEO: Generative Engine Optimization', presented at ACM SIGKDD in 2024, which measured how specific content changes affect citation in generated answers. AEO grew out of practitioner usage around featured snippets and voice answers.
