AI search in 2026, by the numbers

Every figure here is external, linked, and dated. Where studies contradict each other, and several do. That is stated rather than resolved in favour of the more dramatic number.

Clicks

The click-through collapse is real and well evidenced

This is the most robust finding in the whole category, because it comes from observed behaviour rather than modelled estimates.

That last figure deserves more attention than it gets. Even when you win the citation, the click is unlikely. Being cited is worth having for influence and mention. It is not a traffic strategy, and anyone selling it as one is misreading the data.

Google zero-click searches reached 68% in early 2026.

Dissent worth recording: Google disputed the Pew methodology, arguing the measurement window overlapped with unrelated algorithm testing. The direction is corroborated by other studies; the precise magnitude is contested.

Referrals

Where the traffic actually comes from

The most common error in AI-search commentary is treating lost search clicks as though they reappear as assistant referrals. At present they do not.

Google still sends about 87.6% of search referrals; every AI assistant combined sends roughly 0.29%.

Technology Checker, August 2026 update, source ↗

Small, but qualitatively different

AI referral volume is tiny. AI referral quality is not. Panels measuring B2B traffic report conversion rates several times higher than organic search, which is intuitive, someone arriving after an assistant explained and recommended you is much further through their decision than someone who clicked a blue link.

The right reading is that AI referrals are a small, high-intent channel that is growing, not a replacement for search traffic. Budgeting as though it were the latter is how this goes wrong.

AI-assistant referrals convert far above organic search, reported at 14.2% for ChatGPT and 16.8% for Claude, against 2.8% for conventional organic search.

Measured on B2B referral panels; sample sizes are small relative to organic search, so treat as a strong directional signal rather than a precise rate.

Citations

Citation is extremely concentrated

If you are planning to become a cited source, the distribution is the first thing to understand.

Reddit is the single most-cited domain across generative engines, at roughly 40% of multi-engine aggregate citation frequency. Wikipedia is second, appearing in 26–48% of ChatGPT top-10 answers; YouTube third at about 19% of Google AI Overviews top-source share.

The strategic conclusion is uncomfortable but clear: for most organisations, the achievable goal is not to become one of the fifteen domains. It is to be accurately represented within them, in the community threads, reference entries, and trade coverage that the engines already quote.

Content signals

What the cited pages have in common

For commercial and evaluation-stage queries, 83% of AI citations came from pages updated within the previous 12 months, and over 60% from pages refreshed within six months.

  • Recency is a strong filter, especially on commercial and evaluation queries. Most cited pages were updated within the last year, and the majority within six months.
  • The top of the page does most of the work. Over half of sampled citations came from the first 30% of the document.
  • Evidence density outperforms polish. The KDD 2024 research found authority signals, citations, statistics, quotations, moved visibility, while fluency edits and keyword work did much less.

Targeted content changes raised visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.

GEO-bench: roughly 10,000 queries across nine datasets. Authority-style edits, adding citations, statistics and quotations, outperformed cosmetic edits such as rewriting, simplification and keyword work. Effect size varied by domain.

Context

Forecasts, regulation, and the licensing shift

Gartner forecast in 2024 that traditional search engine volume would fall 25% by 2026.

Gartner · via HubSpot, source ↗

Gartner's 2024 forecast of a 25% decline in traditional search volume by 2026 is quoted constantly. It is worth flagging that it was a forecast, not a measurement, and that referral data showing Google's continued dominance sits awkwardly beside it. Both can be true, query volume and referral share are different things, but they are frequently conflated.

OpenAI has assembled roughly 20 publisher partnerships covering 160+ outlets in more than 20 languages; Perplexity's revenue-share programme has added the Los Angeles Times, Adweek and The Independent alongside Time and Fortune.

As of 31 May 2026, nine organisations had active suits against Perplexity over alleged copyright or trademark infringement, including CNN, The New York Times, News Corp, Encyclopedia Britannica and Reddit.

The licensing and litigation picture matters for anyone planning long-term. The corpus these systems draw on is increasingly shaped by commercial agreements and court outcomes rather than open crawling, which means the set of sources an engine is willing to cite is itself becoming a negotiated artefact.

Caveats

How to read all of this responsibly

  • Different populations. Some studies measure US consumer search, others B2B referral panels, others multi-engine citation samples. They are not directly comparable.
  • Different windows. Figures span late 2024 to mid 2026 in a category changing quarterly. A number without a date is not usable.
  • Vendor incentive. Many compilations are published by companies selling AI-visibility tooling, including, in the interest of consistency, this one's publisher. Prefer figures traceable to a primary study.
  • Forecasts are not measurements. Gartner's projection is widely quoted as though it were an observation. It is not.
  • Small samples on citation metrics. Citation and conversion figures often rest on far smaller samples than headline click-through data.

If a statistic on this page is wrong or has been superseded, the source link is there so you can check it. We would rather correct it than defend it.

FAQ

Common questions

What percentage of searches are zero-click in 2026?

Reporting puts Google zero-click searches at roughly 68% in early 2026. Pew's behavioural study found clicks fell from 15% to 8% when an AI summary was present: a relative drop of about 47%.

How much traffic do AI assistants actually send?

Very little in absolute terms. August 2026 reporting has Google at about 87.6% of search referrals with all AI assistants combined at roughly 0.29%. The volume is small; the conversion quality is reported as several times higher than organic.

Which sites do AI engines cite most?

Reddit leads at roughly 40% of multi-engine citation frequency, followed by Wikipedia and YouTube. The top fifteen domains take about 68% of all citations across the five major engines.

Is it true that traditional search dropped 25%?

That was a 2024 Gartner forecast for 2026, not a measurement, and it is frequently quoted as though it were observed. Referral data showing Google's continued dominance complicates the simple reading.

Do AI referrals convert better than organic search?

Reported panels say yes, substantially, around 14–17% versus about 2.8% for organic. Sample sizes are small relative to organic search, so treat it as a strong directional signal rather than a precise rate.
