What is Answer Engine Optimization?

It is the work of becoming the thing an AI quotes when someone asks a question. Not a link in a list. The source named inside the answer.

The basics

The short version

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) means setting up your content so AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews cite you when they answer a question.

The difference from normal SEO is not small. A search engine gives ten links and lets you choose. An AI gives one answer and names two or three sources it trusted.

Ranking is a position. Being cited is yes or no.

That is why a company can rank well and still be completely missing from AI answers about its own industry, without any ranking having moved.

How it works

How AI picks its sources

Knowing the steps explains most of what follows.

  1. 01

    It rewrites your question

Your question becomes one or more searches. This is why small changes in wording change the answer more than people expect.

  2. 02

    It fetches pages

It runs those searches and collects pages that might hold the answer.

  3. 03

    It picks passages, not pages

This is the important bit. It breaks pages into chunks and ranks the chunks. It never quotes a whole page. It quotes a paragraph.

  4. 04

    It writes the answer

It writes a reply based on the chunks it picked, and attaches citations to the sources it used.

What that means for your writing

If your page builds slowly to a conclusion in paragraph nine, there is nothing easy to lift. If it answers the question in the first two lines, there is.

The data backs this up. More than half of sampled citations came from the first 30% of the page. The top of your page does most of the work.

55% of sampled AI Overview citations came from the first 30% of the cited page.

Two clocks

Web search and memory are different things

An AI can answer from two places, and mixing them up wastes more money than any other mistake here.

The two ways an AI answers
It searches the webIt answers from memory
What happensLooks things up, then answersAnswers from its training data
Where you see itChatGPT search, Perplexity, AI OverviewsAny AI answering with search turned off
What moves itWhat you publishWhat other people publish about you
How longDays to weeksMonths, until the model is retrained
Can you control it?Mostly yesOnly indirectly

If you take one thing from this page: measure these two separately. Work that improves the first will show nothing at all against the second until a new model ships. Six months of correct work can look like failure.

Freshness

Old pages get skipped

One of the clearest signals in the 2026 data is how strongly AI favours recently updated pages.

For commercial and evaluation-stage queries, 83% of AI citations came from pages updated within the previous 12 months, and over 60% from pages refreshed within six months.

There is a cheap win in that. For most companies, updating the pages that already answer buyer questions beats writing new ones. A thorough page from 2023 that nobody has touched is at a real disadvantage against a thinner page updated last month.

  • Review your important pages on a schedule, and actually change something. Re-dating a page you did not touch is a trick, and it treats the reader badly.
  • Make your published and updated dates accurate and machine readable.
  • Fix or retire old pages that say things which are no longer true. They keep resurfacing because nobody ever retired them.

Evidence

What the research proves

The strongest study so far tested content changes across about 10,000 questions and measured which ones got cited more.

Targeted content changes raised visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.

GEO-bench: roughly 10,000 queries across nine datasets. Authority-style edits, adding citations, statistics and quotations, outperformed cosmetic edits such as rewriting, simplification and keyword work. Effect size varied by domain.

The pattern is a little awkward for marketing teams. Evidence beats style. Adding numbers, citations and quotes moved the needle. Rewriting for flow, simplifying and keyword work did much less. Keyword stuffing did worse than leaving the page alone.

In practice this is a writing decision, not a technical one. Swap 'significant experience across many markets' for '34 markets since 2019'. Attribute the claim to a named source with a date. Quote a person you can name.

Be careful with second-hand versions of this study. People quote per-tactic percentages that are not all in the paper. The safe claim is the direction: evidence-heavy content beats polished content.

Limits

What AEO cannot do

  • It cannot guarantee a citation. Nobody controls that. Anyone promising a spot is selling something they do not own.
  • It probably will not make your site the cited one. Around 85% of citations point at other people's sites. Being described accurately there is the realistic goal.
  • It cannot fix a confused identity by publishing more. If AI cannot work out who you are, extra content just adds noise.
  • It cannot create demand. Being cited for a question nobody asks is not a result.

FAQ

Common questions

What does AEO stand for?

Answer Engine Optimization. It means earning citations and accurate mentions inside AI answers, rather than ranking in a list of links.

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

They overlap. Both reward clear, findable, credible content, and a site with technical problems is not ready for either. The difference is what you optimise and how you measure it. AEO optimises a quotable paragraph, and is measured by how often you get cited.

What is the single best thing I can do?

Replace vague claims with specific, sourced facts. It has the strongest evidence behind it, it works on pages you already have, and it costs nothing but care.

Does schema markup help?

It helps machines read your page and it matters for identity, which are both needed first. The narrower claim that adding FAQ markup lifts citations is not well proven. Treat it as basic hygiene.

How do I measure AEO?

Pick a fixed set of questions your buyers ask. Run them regularly against the AI tools your buyers use, with search on and off. Record who gets named. Track mentions separately from links, because being described without a link still counts.

How often should I update content?

The 2026 data shows 83% of citations on buying-related questions came from pages updated in the last year. Reviewing your important pages twice a year, with real changes, is a sensible baseline.
